• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the potential formation of Cyclone Arnab in the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of 28th October
• Currently, a low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is predicted to develop into a depression by Saturday night, a deep depression by Sunday, and eventually a cyclonic storm by Monday. The cyclone, named Arnab as proposed by Bangladesh, is anticipated to bring very heavy rainfall to coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha starting from the night of 26th October. Squally weather conditions with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, are likely as the system intensifies.

Impact & Risks

The cyclone poses significant risks to coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, with heavy rainfall and strong winds expected to disrupt daily life. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until 29th October, and those already at sea have been urged to return immediately. The adverse weather conditions may also impact local events, such as Vizianagaram’s annual Sirimantotsavam festival on 27th October, which attracts thousands of devotees from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The combination of heavy rain and strong winds could lead to flooding, property damage, and transportation disruptions in the affected areas.
